The Well-Tempered Clavier

News comes to me from the doughty Juliet - who is not only the stormtrooper of Britain’s reviewers, but also the woman who is standing toe to toe with me in our general distaste for the cover of The Well-Tempered Clavier.

Juliet has discovered that … covers matter!

According to the latest reports, the cover is the most important bit of the whole book. More important than the blurb. And far, far more important than the actual text …

"So what do you make of that then Tom?" I asked. I’d got him up good and early, because he’s on US time.

"What do I make of what?"

"Authoritative research which states that the cover is crucial. And -"

"And what? Can I get some breakfast please?"

"For every one person who you can find who likes the cover of the book, I’ll give you ten who hate it -"

"What are you talking about? This is just some loony thing you’ve cooked up with Juliet. It’s a great cover! We took it round to all the book shops and they loved it."

"I don’t know about the book-shops mate, but I can tell you that the book-buyers hate it -"

"Can I go and have my breakfast now?"
