Disastrous news from Idle Tom

Idle Tom the publisher calls with bad news - some very bad news.

Emma, lynch-pin of the entire Legend Press operation and the sole restraining influence on Idle Tom, is leaving.

"That’s terrible," I said. "Couldn’t you give her a pay-rise? A new position? She’d make a great Chief Executive."

"She’s quite adamant," he said. "She’s going off to work for an African NGO, Riders for Health."

"Well - great move for her. But how’s that leave you? How’s that leave Legend?"

"Ohh," said Tom, with all his usual insouciance. "I’m already interviewing. And until then, I’ll just soldier on by myself."

"Big job, you know Tom. I think sooner rather than later. Wouldn’t like to think of you all in charge by yourself."

"Oh, I’ll be fine. Don’t you worry about me."

"It’ll be lonely as well. Especially if you don’t have a girlfriend."

"I’ll be … now what would you call it … a Tough Guy! Or even a Tough Publisher!"

"You might think that Tom - but I couldn’t possibly comment."

I heard that The Intrepid Emma is leaving us for pastures new (or deserts new, or plains, or lions?). I hope that her replacement is equally superhuman and has a name that easily lends itself to a nickname from us authors! Emma’s going to be working on Eight Hours so I won’t get withdrawal symptoms just yet. But, ooh, let’s start taking bets on whether her replacement will be male/female and if they eat all the biscuits in the office.
